Nothing says Fall like tailgating, football, and sports-related concussions. A concussion is a brain injury that occurs when someone sustains a blow or jolt to the head that can disrupt the normal function of the brain. Concussions are common injuries among athletes who play contact sports such as football, soccer, rugby, hockey, and lacrosse. Roughly 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions are reported in the United States each year.

Concussions may also occur off of the playing field when there is a blow to the head as a result of an impact injury such as a fall, car accident, or an assault. Regardless of the cause, it is important to recognize the common symptoms of a concussion and to seek appropriate medical treatment to help prevent a serious brain injury or even death.

Common Symptoms of Concussions

If you experience any of the below symptoms after suffering a blow to the head, you should seek medical treatment as quickly as possible:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Memory Loss
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in ears
  • Sensitivity to light or sounds
  • Blurred vision

Danger Signs Requiring Emergency Treatment

In rare cases, dangerous blood clots may form on the brain as a result of a concussion. If you have any of the following symptoms, go to the nearest emergency room immediately:

  • Weakness, numbness or decreased coordination
  • Difficulty waking up
  • One eye pupil is larger than the other
  • Convulsions or seizures

Medical Treatment for Concussions

Concussions need to be treated as quickly as possible by a doctor since they are brain injuries. Your doctor may order a CT scan of the brain to help diagnose your injuries. You may also be kept overnight in the hospital for observation. Depending on the severity of your concussion, your doctor may also refer you to a neurologist or rehabilitation specialist for further evaluation. While concussions can be a life-altering event, the good news is that most are treatable if diagnosed early.
